Can I use SQL Server as an external DB in free version

Is it possible to use MS SQL Server as an external DB in Mendix's free version?  I've checked the answer for the same question in this post, it means we  couldn't use the SQL Server as a DB of the Platform.  But Is it possible to use it as an external DB?  https://community.mendix.com/link/questions/9288

With the free version, you are not able to choose your database platform.  All free version apps use Postgres.
