2.5 server deployment

We're planning to deploy our 2.5 app to a windows server. We've read the 2.5 deployment documentation and are confused about the url rewriter. We aren't currently using the deeplink module. So is it mandatory to use the ASP.NET component Managed Fusion Url Rewriter as described in Mendix 2.5 Documentation? We don't want use IIS, but reading the documentation implicates that IIS is required.

If you use IIS, the rewriter is required for the XAS and FILE requests as well. However, it is not necessary to use IIS, although it will perform better. But the application runs standalone as well.
