All depends on what kind of info you want to store. Mendix can out of the box store the created date, changed date, created by user and changed by user. But if you also want to store which attribute has changed etc. you need the audittrail module. So it depends on your use case. If you need to keep track of who changed which field etc use the audit trail. But most of the time this is really overkill and the tools out of the box gives you already enough info on who did what.
