Is there an option available to batch replace all instances of an image throughout a project (for example, a button image) with a different image?

Yes, but not for system images. Go to for instance Administration/Images. Add the new image. Look for the name of the image you want to replace. Now delete this (old) image. It will give you warnings. Now rename the new image with the name of the old image. It again will give you some warnings but continue anyway. Now the image is replaced througout your project.

This will not work for system images because you can not add or delete those. But finding all reference will quickly give you all the places where the image is used. These have to be replaced by hand.
