What does the use LDAP checkbox mean?

In my server settings there's a "use LDAP" property. Could anybody explain what LDAP is, and what it means to use it in my project?

When checkbox is checked the Mendix server will use the LDAP Server to authenticate users, more information on LDAP can be found Server Settings
