Is it possible to extend the rich text editor with a language check?

Yes that is possible (I think, your problem description is not very concrete).

So I suggest filing an extensive feature request if you want that behavior added

You can easily add a add-on in firefox to check grammar in different languages. Personally I don't think that Mendix should implement things like this. Using firefox with the right add-on solves this issue. I'm using it right now to check my own grammar :)
