What is the best environment to develop and debug Mendix widgets? If you are used to Eclipse going back to trial and error or simple logging is not really productive. It seems to be possible to do Javascript in Eclipse.

You can use an eclipse branche called Aptana. Most people here at R&D use Vim. At community we prefer Komodo Edit.
