Connecting to External Database rather dan in-built on AWS server

Hi, I have already built an app for my company. But the data to be stored is very large hence putting this app on cloud will be hard. So we have come up with a plan of deploying the code in AWS . We are alos creating an huge database on AWS for the app. I dont want the App to connect to the built in database but instead i want it to connect to the external database how we have in the Mendix Business Modeler. Is this possible to connect to external source rather dan built -in in Mendix ?
