Others can 'vote down', I understand, but is there also an automatic mechanism that results in negative reputation points? Just curious, why would I have a -12 on the question "Is it possible to send another forum user a direct message"? Thanks Jan

Maybe an equal amount of people voted you up and down. To be honest, I don't know the exact calculations behind reputation. You can check out the code at github
