In the new version of mozilla firebug I am unable to access the widgets.js file for setting breakpoints e.g. Does anyone know how to achieve this as it was possible in earlier versions.

Same problem here. I switched for that reason to Google Chrome. A 'debugger;' statement in the JS or break on exception generally works for me.
