This issue was caused by the default security settings of the Chrome browser. Maps was marked as an "insecure widget" because it was incorporated in the "MyDomain.mendixcloud.com" url. Chrome will give the user a warning and after accepting this warning, Google Maps will become visible. Locally it all works fine in Chrome.
