Changes to data view design not showing in browser (IE8)

This is an annoying thing that keeps recurring - I change the width of a column in dev and it is not fully reflected in the browser. If I halve the width of a column, it shows only a relatively small change in the column width in the browser. Only seems to happen in tabbed forms. I am working on a fat client on a network. Probably is a local thing, but maybe someone has seen it before and has a solution?
