Instance access: Accesible for owner. What is it exactly doing?

When setting instance access security on an object I have the possibility to select 'Accessible for owner'. What is this property exactly doing?

I'm fairly sure this means the user that created this object can access it, regardless of his roles.

If you selected the "Store owner" option on the entity, this button creates the xpath constraint that is used to give access rights to the user that created the object.
