Excel Export Error - TDS protocol stream is not valid

We have a customer who is using the Export to Excel button to export a data grid. They intermittently receive and error and we find a corresponding error in the log below: ConnectionBus_Retrieve: JDBCDataStore::execRetrieveQuery failed with SQLState: 08S01, error code: 0, message: The TDS protocol stream is not valid. What causes this issue and is there a way to debug. We've been unable to recreate.
