How to set a default dateandtime value to an attribute

I need to assign the current date and time as a default value to an attribute with a DateTime data type. It appears that even after setting the default value in domain model as [%CurrentDateTime%] and localize to No it doesnt seem to work. Please suggest a solution. Thanks in advance.
