The selected theme does not exist in the theme directory of the project directory

What is going wrong when I get this error: 'The selected theme does not exist in the theme directory of the project directory'? I get this error everytime I want to deploy, the solution is going to 'settings' and selecting the theme manually (which is present in the deploymentlocation)

Select the theme manually at Settings > Deployment > Theme and press save.

A problem I have had was to replace the theme in the theme-folder by a theme with the same name. That did not work. I had to deploy without a selected theme and then select it again and deploy it for a second time.
