how to exernal database

hello experts, can some one guide me to use external database  as i know mendix has ability to connect with external databases also we have data base connector module available on mendix marketplace but i want to know initial setup , means which software i have to required for external database , i want to use mysql so for that should i need to install mysql workbench or xampp or another software. please explain.
