Android mobile app says Your app is outdated, install a new version and try again

I built the .apk after I had started my application on the server (free account), so it must have been the latest code.  But when I start the app on my phone, it says it is outdated. Then I uninstalled the app and installed it again.  This time it said it was updating, then it said it was optimizing, then it said it was outdated. My app must be able to support offline mode, is this one of the edge cases mentioned in the mobile app how-to where I have to build it myself in order to enable the offline capabilities in the index.html?  Not clear whether the "offline" checkbox in the mobile app profile settings accomplishes this automagically...
