Experiences with migration from version 5.4.1 to 7.1.0

I need to migrate an application from 5.4.1 to 7.1.0. Does anyone have experience with a similar migration? What are best practices on these kind of heavier migrations? Is it a best practice to first move to 6 and then to 7?  etc etc..   Thanks in advance!
