When using assert equals if I select a data type as date I can not change it back to any other data type within the same window.

You can change the data type in the assert equals action after you have selected a certain data type and saved it. To do this you have to double-click on the input value, so the "edit input value" dialog opens. Then you have to set it to empty and save it. If you then reopen the "edit input value" dialog you can change the datatype in Constant.
