It would be nice for the end-users if they could close popups with the escape key instead of clicking the cross or Cancel. The ESC key should be mapped to the Close button at the top right.

You are right except if you allocate a popup to the main Mendix navigation it doesn't work anymore. You have to click into the popup box and then press escape. Maybe this is more like a bug then?
This should be already the case. At least in my current project (Mx 8.12.5) I can close popups via pressing ESC (Show Message popups and popup pages)
