Remove empty option in Reference Selector

I would like to be able to remove the empty option in a reference selector.

During my projects at both Rabobank and Philips I was asked to remove the empty option in the reference selector.

Having the possibility to select the empty option and subsequently receive a validation message is apparently not that user friendly;)
