Pluggable Widget works in Mendix 9 but not in Mendix 8

We have created a pluggable widget that uses @mendix/pluggable-widgets-tools": "^9.18.0. The widget works correctly after it was imported into a Mendix 9 project. When we try to use the same widget in a Mendix 8 project we are seeing in the UI that the widget is Unknown. I dont see any console errors. Are we able to create widgets with the current widget generator or do we need to recreate the widget with an older generator?
