Styles from a custom widget is not reflecting in the application

Hello All, I have created a custom widget and imported some external styles to it. But after adding the widget to the application. The styles are not applied. I could see the css file in deployment folder. If I manually import this external style in the custom-variables.scss in the application it is working, Why it is not picking up from the widget?
