Assign target to menu main-items

I use a navigation tree with main-items and sub-items. When I try to assign a target to one of the menu's main-items I get the following error message: "Items with subitems cannot target themselves" Is there a way to work around this problem?

The error is slightly different: ' Items with subitems cannot have target themselves '. You can not combine it, either it has subitems or a target. You have to add a main-item that has a target in your case.
