Wait for search ignored with default value in Mendix 7?

We are upgrading an app from Mendix 6.9.1 to 7.22.1. In Mendix 6, we had a datagrid with a hidden search field with a default value and ‘Wait for search’ enabled (because of a very large dataset), which caused the message ‘Please enter one or more search criteria.’ to be shown before data was retrieved. In Mendix 7.22.1 the data is (slowly) retrieved anyway (without waiting for additional search criteria), and the message isn't shown. Is this behaviour by design or a bug?
