Clarification on Thread Re: File Link

Hi – based on this thread, https://community.mendix.com/link/questions/4807, I assume the only way for me to link to a network drive in Mendix is if I expose it via SharePoint or some other HTTP repository? None of the other widgets like URLRedirector, HTMLsnippet, Format String, etc., seem to work, and my understanding is, it is because of my browser security. Has anyone found a workaround to this other than SharePoint or some web server?
