Upgrading directly from Mendix 10 to 12 vs. 10 -> 11 -> 12: Risks and Best Practices?

0
Hi everyone,We are currently running an application on Mendix 10.16. Looking ahead, we are planning a future upgrade once Mendix 12 becomes available.We are evaluating the upgrade strategy and would like to get insights from the community on the risks involved:Option A: Direct upgrade from Mendix 10 to 12Option B: Step-by-step upgrade (Mendix 10 -> 11 -> 12 with a period of production runtime on v11)From a technical and maintenance perspective:What are the main risks of skipping Mendix 11 and upgrading directly to 12? (e.g., deprecated features, marketplace module incompatibilities, or breaking changes that are hard to isolate)Is Option B (hop-by-hop upgrade) strongly recommended by experienced developers, or is Option A feasible for standard applications?I would really appreciate any advice, past experiences, or best practice recommendations!Thanks in advance!

There is no best practice, there is only one option. Ever since Mendix 6 you need to upgrade to the latest minor version (e.g. 10.24.x) to be able to upgrade to the next major version (Mendix 11. It's already necessary to update to 10.24 for 11, so I highly doubt Mendix will make an exception for Mendix 12. This means you better upgrade to Mendix 11.12 right now and in 12 months to 11.24. Then once Mendix 12 becomes publically available, somewhere in December 2027, you can upgrade from 11.24 to Mendix 12.

Even if you could upgrade from 10 to 12, I would strongly advice against.

In regard to deprecations: Starting from Mendix 12, all datagrids and list views will stop working and should be replaced by respectively the Datagrid 2 and gallery widget. Better start replacing them now already.

Hi Hiromitsu Oinuma,
Option B is preferred for complex Mendix applications with custom modules, integrations, or critical production workloads. Although Option B takes more time, it helps reduce risks during the upgrade. Option A can be suitable for simpler applications with fewer dependencies.
