Efficient Translations – A Single Table for All Languages

4

The current localization process in Mendix is highly inefficient and outdated compared to modern development environments. Unlike almost every contemporary IDE or programming framework (which often utilize structured resource files like strings.xml for different languages, e.g., one for English, one for German, allowing for easy management), Mendix forces developers to manually switch languages and edit each individual UI element (buttons, labels, messages). This manual, element-by-element approach is extremely time-consuming, error-prone, lacks a global overview, and scales poorly for larger, multi-language projects.

I propose a Centralized Translation Workbench within Mendix Studio Pro that aligns with modern localization best practices. This workbench should offer:

  1. An interactive, tabular overview of all translatable strings, with columns for each language, enabling direct inline editing.
  2. tagging system to categorize strings (e.g., by module, UI area, or status).
  3. Advanced filtering and search based on these tags, string content, and translation status.
  4. Contextual previews to show where a string is used in the UI.
  5. Consideration for auto-translation features to further accelerate the initial localization effort.

This enhancement would significantly boost efficiency, ensure translation consistency, reduce manual effort, and greatly improve the developer experience for multi-language Mendix applications, bringing it in line with industry standards.
